bio-security & the wool industry
What is biosecurity? Biosecurity is the measures designed to protect the population against detrimental biological or biochemical substances. Our Bull is standing on a platform which is representing a bird’s eye view of a farm. The fences are made out of wire to prevent foxes, dingoes or feral dogs from injuring or killing the stock. The fences are also there to stop rabbits and other animal’s farmer consider pests.
Bio-security Impacts on the Wool Industry
Bio-security is the process and procedures taken to prevent the population’s farms from biological and biochemical threats. Many different biological and biochemical diseases effect the wool industry in many different ways. Ovine brucellosis (OB) is a bacterial infection that primarily impacts sheep. This infection would greatly alter production rates as it causes the sheep to lose fertility stopping breeding and the production of wool as no more sheep will be born. Diseases like these will greatly impact the wool industry and are a serious threat to all farmers bio-security is in production to prevent this from happening.

Biosecurity means securing a farm from diseases and other harmful things. The consequences of a serious disease outbreak may place the entire Farm at risk. But by being prepared for such a thing can reduce the loss of animal lives and it spreading within the property. Here is some parasites and diseases that can harm and kill sheep’s:
- Footrot
- Ovine Johne's disease
- Noxious weeds
- Sheep lice
- Drench resistance
- Hydatid disease
- Brucellosis
